Description

The SSI React Right Instructor (RRI) program is a professional training path that qualifies SSI Professionals to teach first aid, CPR, AED use, and oxygen administration. It focuses on preparing instructors to provide students with the knowledge and confidence to act as emergency first responders.

Core Objectives and Expectations
The primary goal of the program is to develop instructors who can facilitate an active learning environment where students master life-saving skills through real-world scenarios. As an instructor candidate, you are expected to:
  • Master the Total Teaching System: Utilize digital learning, instructor manuals, and presentation enhancement guides to provide a structured yet flexible training experience.
  • Facilitate Active Learning: Move beyond traditional lectures to use group discussions, problem-solving activities, and field trips that increase student retention and skill development.
  • Demonstrate Technical Proficiency: Model proper techniques for CPR, AED application, and the assembly/disassembly of emergency oxygen systems.
The Certification Path
There are two primary ways to become certified as a React Right Instructor:
  1. Specialty Instructor Seminar: A seminar conducted by an active status Recreational or Freediving Assistant Instructor Trainer who is also a React Right Specialty Instructor.
  2. Co-Teaching: A candidate can co-teach the program with an active status React Right Specialty Instructor who has issued at least five certifications in the program.
Program Requirements and Standards
  • Candidate Prerequisites: Candidates must be at least 18 years old. Non-SSI Professionals may only become instructors by completing the Specialty Instructor Seminar.
  • Materials and Equipment: Training must be conducted using current and appropriate first aid/CPR mannequins (adult, child, and infant), oxygen administration units with various masks, and AED training equipment.
  • Instructor Ratios: There is no maximum candidate-to-instructor ratio for the React Right Instructor Seminar, provided the instructor can control and supervise all candidates effectively.
Key Curriculum Areas
The program covers six critical academic sessions designed to ensure a well-rounded foundation for first responders:
  • Basic Life Support: Focuses on scene assessment, personal protective equipment, and the “DRSABCD” action plan.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): Teaches the “Chain of Survival” and the proper ratios and techniques for adult, child, and infant CPR.
  • Automated External Defibrillation (AED): Instructs on the safe application and administration of an AED in combination with CPR.
  • Respiratory Arrest and Drowning: Covers airway obstructions (choking) and the specific needs of drowning victims.
  • First Aid Techniques: Includes managing shock, severe bleeding, burns, fractures, and medical emergencies like strokes or heart attacks.
  • Oxygen Provider: Teaches the role of oxygen therapy and how to use demand, non-rebreather, and pocket masks.
Requirements for Completion and Active Status
To successfully complete the program, candidates must:
  • Finish the Specialty Instructor Seminar or co-teaching requirements.
  • Pass the React Right final exam.
  • Successfully complete required practical application scenarios, including at least two for First Aid/CPR, one for AED, and one for Oxygen Provider.
Active Status: To remain eligible to teach, instructors must conduct a minimum of one React Right program every 24 months. If the certification becomes inactive, the instructor must return to active status by co-teaching a complete program or attending another Specialty Instructor Seminar.
